Inside Bets

Author: Chris Mwangi

Roulette offers two main bet categories, one of which is inside bets. These wagers are placed on the numbered portion of the table. Players can choose to bet on a single number, two adjacent numbers (a split), four numbers that form a square, or three numbers in a row (a street). In American roulette, there is an additional option that covers a group of five numbers. Each betting option has a unique name, and the details below will cover these options further.

Understanding Inside Bets in Roulette

There are five different inside bets in roulette: straight up, split, street, corner, basket, and six line. Basket is an inside bet that is only available in the double zero (American) variants.

  • Straight-Up: This is a bet on one single number. Just put your chips on any number. Paying 1 to 35, the probability of winning in the single zero version is 2.70%, and 2.60% in the American version.
  • Split: A wager on two adjacent numbers. The chips have to be placed on the line that separates these numbers. Pays 1 to 17. The Chances of winning in this European variant are 5.40% and 5.30% in its American counterpart.
  • Street: This bet covers three numbers in a row. In order to place this bet, chips must be put along the edge of one line separating the outside rows containing the desired three numbers. This bet pays 11 to 1. The probability of winning a single-number bet in European roulette is 7.90%, while in American (double-zero) roulette, it is 8.10%.
  • Corner: This is a bet on four numbers. This bet covers four numbers that form a 2x2 block on the roulette layout. To place this bet, you put your chip at the intersection where these four numbers meet. It pays 1 to 8 and the chances of winning are 10.80% in the European and 10.50% in the American variant.
  • Basket: Only available in American roulette. It is a bet on five numbers (0, 00, 1, 2, 3). You must place your chips on the line separating pockets 0 and 1. It pays 1 to 6 and has a 13.15% chance of winning.
  • Six Line: A bet on six numbers in two rows next to each other, where each row has three numbers. Chips are to be placed at the point where the rows intersect. It pays 1 to 5 and the winning chances are 16.20% in the EU version while 15.80% in the US version.

Strategies & Systems for Inside Bets

It is a good idea to play using a strategy to reduce, spread and properly manage the risk of inside bets. Strategies do not guarantee a win, but they can help you manage your budget efficiently and/or significantly increase your chances of winning. Below are the most common roulette strategies you can use for inside bets.

9 Street System

This is a strategy based on street bets, which also controls what the stakes will be. It is based on short-term profits and is not suitable for long-term play. Here's how it works:

  • Place 9 street bets worth 1 AUD each.
  • Since each bet will contain three numbers, you will have a total of 30 outcome coverage. This will give you a 73% chance of winning.
  • If you win, in the next round place 9 street bets. Do not change the bet amount. Each win will result in increasing bankroll by 3 AUD.
  • If you lose, don't change a thing, but avoid the street that won that round in the next round.

Immediately stop playing once you are in profit. If you don't, the strategy won't work.

9 Street System

9 Split System

As the name suggests, this is a system based on split betting. Once again, it focuses on increasing your chances of winning and strictly manages the bet amounts. How it Works:

  • You'll place 9 split bets of 1 AUD each; make sure the numbers covered by every bet are the same color.
  • Since each bet will comprise two numbers, you will be covering a total of 18 outcomes. This will give you an approximate 48% chance of winning. Every time you win, 9 AUD will be added to your bankroll.
  • If you lose, proceed with increasing the bet amount by 1x.
  • If you win, return to the beginning of the cycle and once again start with bets of 1 AUD.
9 Split System

This system is also designed for short game sessions but is more volatile than the one above, meaning it will require a larger bankroll.

11 Number System

This system has straight-up bets, but per round, you need to place a total of 11. Still, you can't select the numbers at random but according to this pattern:

  • The first number you choose must be the last winning number.
  • The others should be the 10 numbers around the first number you choose.
11 Number System

For example, let's say you choose 15 as the first number. The numbers around 15 are 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, and 25. Place a straight bet of 1 AUD on each of these. This will give you a 29% chance of winning each round. You will have invested a total of 11 AUD, giving you a chance to win 35 AUD.

Features

Inside bets carry a higher risk compared to outside bets. When players opt for these wagers, the balance of their funds tends to vary greatly. The low probability of success can result in a string of losses that shrink the funds, while a win can lead to a sharp increase due to the high payout. The chart below shows how the funds of four players changed during a session in which they placed only split bets. Here, the horizontal axis represents the number of spins, and the vertical axis reflects the players' funds.

Conclusion

Inside bets appeal to players who are risk-tolerant and have no bankroll restrictions. Their high volatility comes with a certain risk, meaning you're more likely to lose, and for the same reason you'll need a bigger bankroll. But this is not a risk you take in vain: they pay out much bigger than outside bets and even one lucky spin can lead to an amazing profit. To reduce and spread the risk, we recommend playing with strategies and adding combination bets into your gameplay. This way, you can manage the risk/reward balance more efficiently.
